The New Honda Odyssey Oil Life/Maintenance Light Reset Guide

Last Updated on November 23, 2023 by Nick

The fifth-generation Honda Odyssey was first unveiled to the world in January 2017 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Today I will talk about resetting the oil life or maintenance light on this latest generation of Honda Odyssey.

The maintenance light comes out for various reasons, but one of the most common is the oil changes due, and I’m going to show you how to reset that. So you don’t need to take it to a Honda dealer; you can do it yourself in about 30 seconds.

Time needed: 3 minutes

I’ve changed the engine oil on my 2020 Honda Odyssey, so now it’s time to reset the oil life light or maintenance minder on there. We will be using this tiny touchpad here on the left-hand side of the steering wheel to do it. So here’s how you do that:

  1. Turn your ignition on but don’t start the car

Leave your foot off the brake and press the POWER button two times

  2. Press the HOME button

Hit the home button on the steering wheel and it’s going to come up with some screens and some settings here

For your info, this operation work for the fifth generation of the Honda Odyssey (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 model years). The older model has a little bit different but I’ll try to get you a link up here.

Honda Maintenance Code

Honda no longer has a recommended time or mileage interval for doing the service. It now has a maintenance minder system that tells you what to do as you go along with the vehicle. So the maintenance minder system saves you trips to the dealership, costs less money, and positively impacts the environment through natural resources.

The onboard computer system starts at 100 percent, and depending on your driving conditions and use of the vehicle, it goes down from there, counting down to 15 percent, which will bring up your maintenance minder system. You’ll see a small orange wrench on the dash, and it will also give you a message of service due soon, or it will give you the code and percentage of your oil life at five percent. The dash will change the service due now, so take your vehicle to the local Honda dealer soon. If your vehicle service is overdue at a zero percent service pass, take your car to your Honda dealer as soon as possible.

When your maintenance minder light is on, you will always see the main code of either A or B. So here’s the explanation:

  • A for replacing just the engine oil
  • B for replacing the engine oil and oil filter, Inspect front and rear brakes, checking the parking brake adjustment, and inspecting other specific items in the vehicle

At times there will also be a sub-code with numbers one through six. Here’s the sub-item code:

  1. rotate the tires
  2. replace the air cleaner element and check the drive belts and replace the dust and pollen filter
  3. replace the transmission fluid and transfer case fluid if applicable
  4. replace the spark plugs and replace the timing belt; if equipped, inspect the water pump and inspect the valve clearance
  5. replace the engine coolant
  6. replace the rear differential fluid if equipped

Odyssey’s Check Engine Warning Light

You cannot reset the Honda Odyssey’s check engine light. When anything is wrong with the automobile, this light turns on. However, it may be caused by just about anything. You should only consider unexpected problems if something very evident has gone wrong.

Taking the automobile to a technician and having them scan it with an OBD tool is the best option. This way, they will be able to interpret the error number and inform you of the location of the issue. The light will go out as soon as you figure out what’s wrong.

The gas cap and fuel door are two things you should double-check before you go to the workshop. This light will also turn on if the cap is missing or the door is left open. Make sure you check this out first before going to the mechanic.
