When you first drive an electric car like Tesla it can cause its own problems, especially when the battery is running low and you don’t know how to open the charge port. It will definitely be an awkward moment but don’t worry here we will help you!

2018-2021 Tesla Model 3 Charge Port Door Release

There are many ways to open the charge port door on the Tesla Model 3. This is quite interesting to discuss because many people don’t know it. Are you one of them? Let’s check it out.

With Tesla Charger Cable

This method is one of the most practical ways to open the charge port door. Just bring the Tesla charger handle to the port door and then press and hold the button on the handle when the car is unlocked and in Park position.

With Touchscreen

If you are lazy to get out of the car to open the charge port door, you can open it via the touchscreen from inside the car. Choose one of the following three ways to open it:

  1. From the app launcher menu tap the CHARGING app, next tap the OPEN CHARGE PORT
  2. From the home screen tap the charging icon on the car status area
  3. Tap the charging icon on the card’s area and then tap the OPEN CHARGE PORT

With Remote Key

Apart from using the touchscreen, you can also open the charger port door using a key fob accessory. Just press and hold the REAR TRUNK button for 2 seconds and the lid will open.

Open Manually

Time needed: 1 minute

If the three methods above don’t work for you, the last way is to open it manually by hand.

  1. Turn off and unlock the car

Keep the vehicle in PARK position

  2. Exit the vehicle and find the charge port

The charge port is located on the left side of the vehicle

  3. Push and release the bottom of the charge port door

It will pop open and allowing you to recharge the car

These instructions are based on the Tesla Model 3 owner’s manual. This procedure should apply to the first generation of the Tesla Model 3 (2018 2019 2020 2021 model years).
