How to Tell If Your Chevy Silverado Needs an Engine Oil Change

Your engine depends on engine oil for proper lubrication and performance. If you do not change your oil regularly, you could void your powertrain warranty. The best way to get a good oil change is to visit your local Chevrolet dealership. An oil change is a vital part of maintaining your Chevy’s powertrain. Regular oil changes are critical to maintain your truck’s engine and keep your vehicle running at peak performance.

If you’re unsure how often your car needs an oil change, the best way to tell is to check the oil level on your dashboard every few months. You’ll notice your oil has a slight color difference, it is time for an oil change. If the oil’s color is dark, your engine is likely showing signs of severe damage. Checking the oil for metal particles is a simple way to tell if your engine is suffering from wear.

The Chevrolet Silverado oil light is in the dash and will turn on when your truck approaches its scheduled oil change. It monitors the number of miles since the last oil change and shows a percentage of life left in some models. It is an orange light that looks like an oil can and is located on the dashboard. If the light remains on while you drive, it is probably time for an oil change.

How To Read and Reset Others Service Warnings

The driver information center or DIC on Duramax diesel-equipped Silverado HDS displays several messages that help you keep on top of diesel-related operation and maintenance. Some messages are available through the DIC menu.

Others are automatically displayed in the DIC as warnings to access messages that are always available in the DIC menu using the controls on the right side of the steering wheel. Use the up arrow to move up through the list and the down arrow to move down through the list, then press the ✓ button to open a menu or select a menu item.

The DIC in your diesel Silverado HD will also display warnings or service messages. Fuel system messages may appear. A coolant level low message will appear if the truck is low on coolant and will automatically clear once coolant has been added.

Under certain driving conditions, when the diesel particulate exhaust filter cannot clean itself, such as stop and go traffic, a message may appear that communicates that the filter is being cleaned. When you see the Cleaning Exhaust Filter message, drive your truck above 30 miles per hour until the message clears. This will take about 30 minutes.

You’ll see the Engine Power Reduced message if the filters are not clean. Your crock’s performance will be limited until the filter is clean. Multiple Driver Information Center messages and escalating vehicle speed limitations communicate the importance of keeping the death fluid replenished.

FAQ – Chevy Silverado Maintenance

What kind of transmission fluid does a Chevy Silverado take?

DEXRON-ViATF automatic transmission fluid is required for all Chevrolet Silverado 1500 cars with automatic transmissions. Your gearbox will work smoothly for years if you follow this recommendation from General Motors.

What kind of fluid goes in a rear differential?

Gear oil with a viscosity of 75W-90 is used in this truck since it is a heavy-duty vehicle. The 8.6-inch rear differential has 4.2 pints, whereas the 9.5-inch rear differential has 5.5 pints.

How often should differential gear oil be changed?

You should change the Silverado’s gear oil every 30,000-60,000 miles. A typical repair will cost between $243 and $300, including the cost of supplies and hiring a specialist.

What power steering fluid does Chevy use?

Full-synthetic power steering fluid, like Prestone, is used in the Chevy Silverado.

So that’s it. So now your oil life is reset, and you’re good for another three or five thousand miles depending on enrolling. Thanks for stopping by and have a beautiful day!
