Hey everyone, welcome to my site. So I went to change the oil on our work truck for the first time last Saturday. And now I figured I’d share the procedure with you if anyone were interested in seeing how to reset the oil life light yourself in a GMC Sierra after an oil change.
So after you have finished the oil change, the last thing to do is reset the oil life system. It’s typical for people to aim for a mileage number to hit for oil changes, but Sierra’s computer actually accounts for your driving habits and time between oil changes. According to the manual, the truck will give you a 600-mile warning when determining you need an oil change. So let’s get to work.

The fastest way to reset the oil life on this GMC Sierra is by turning the key to the on position and mashing the GAS pedal three times right quick without starting the truck.

If your vehicle has an ignition button, press and holds the Start/Stop button for 5 seconds without step on the brake pedal
Push the left button on the steering wheel to go into the cluster menu
Highlight and then hit ✓ on the INFO
Next, go into your Oil Life monitor screen and you can use the up-or-down control button to scroll into it
After that, go ahead and press on the right button so there it’s gonna give you an option to reset
So now we would want to do is just hit the ✓ button to reset
Then a confirmation message will appear, select yes to confirm and you’re done

The GMC Sierra engine oil life system helps owners determine when to change the oil in their vehicle. It can last up to 12,000 miles or four thousand miles in city driving if adequately maintained. You should check the oil in your car at least once every year and change the filter as needed. To increase the life of your GMC’s oil, you should rotate the tires every couple of months and have them inspected by a mechanic. You should also consider an alignment if you haven’t already. This will help reduce uneven tire wear.
The engine oil life system maintenance schedule for your 2020 GMC Sierra includes changing the oil and changing the engine filter. During these visits, the GMC technicians check the evaporative control system, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and spark plugs. Additionally, the service will include visual inspection and tire rotation. A technician will check the condition of all hoses, belts, and lighting components. The brakes will be limited to ensure they’re working correctly.
The engine oil life monitor will tell you when your vehicle needs an oil change. It also keeps track of how many miles you’ve driven since your last oil change. The odometer will display when you’re due for an oil change. The oil life monitor can skip this step if the remaining life of the engine is 100%. Your GMC Sierra engine oil life monitor is a convenient tool for drivers when they need to change the oil.
The cost of an oil change for your GMC Sierra might vary greatly depending on where you get it done. Filter and oil are included in the regular oil change. You should expect to pay anything from $70 to $90 for this service.
The engine oil for the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is 100 percent synthetic. The 2.7L 4-cylinder engine of the vehicle uses 0W-30 and has a capacity of 6 quarts of oil. In addition, the 4.3L V6 can carry 6 quarts of oil. In both the 5.3L and the 6.2L V8 engines with an 8-quart capacity, each of these engines can run on 0W-20.
2017 GMC Sierra 1500 transmissions utilize 6 quarts of full synthetic Dexron Vi Automatic transmission fluid.
