Synyster Gates or simply Syn is an American musician, best known for being the lead guitarist of the band Avenged Sevenfold. Synyster Gates ranked at #87 in Guitar World’s “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”, and he has received widespread critical acclaim for his work with Avenged Sevenfold. He has a line of signature models from Californian guitar company Schecter. He has appeared with many different styles of his custom Schecter guitars, however he tends to use his black with silver pinstripes and Gates has clearly enjoyed full creative control when spec’ing this latest model, the Custom-S.

This guitar’s made in South Korea and finished in pin stripes (Black with White pinstripes, Black with Gold pinstripes, Black with Red pinstripes, White with Gold pinstripes, White with Black pinstripes), the mahogany body cuts an aggressive silhouette. The neck is 3-piece mahogany set neck with Ultra Access heel plays fast and provides unbridled fretting range. It has 24 jumbo frets and flatter-than-Kansas ebony fingerboard give you crisp, snappy attack. It’s dense like maple but with oilier pores, more brittle grain, and a stronger fundamental. Ebony is the tonewood you want under your fretting fingers if you’re shredding. It boosts your pick attack with meaty, percussive overtones that mute out quickly and drive your sustain. The pearloid Death Bat inlay on the 12th fret completes the picture on an ebony fretboard, gives this axe a cool custom look.

Where the Custom-S differs greatly from the Custom is that it pairs a Seymour Duncan Synyster Gates Invader bridge humbucker with a game-changing Sustainiac OEM SYN in the neck which is an active pickup. Seymour Duncan Invader humbucking pickup provides the bite you need for in-your-face riffing. Gates’ signature Invader in the bridge position is a gnarly beast, with three ceramic magnets and overwound coils rinsing as much output as possible from a passive pickup. It can sound shrill; with clean tones it lacks character, but its harmonic response and attitude is perfect for metal guitarists. Powered by a nine-volt battery, Sustainiac humbucking neck pickup delivers infinite sustain for over the top solos. This unique pickup design features a special sustain circuit that’s designed to let notes ring on as long as you like. Just kick in the sustain circuit, play a note or chord on your Synyster Gates Custom-S, and Sustainiac driver takes the pickup’s signal and turns it into vibrational energy, then feeds the energy back into the string for infinite sustain.

It features one volume knob, one tone knob, three way toggle for the pickups, an on/off mini toggle for the Sustainiac and a three way mini toggle to switch between the normal mode, mix mode and harmonic mode. Mastering the Sustainiac’s musical potential is a little tricky, but it’s a lot of fun, too. The Normal setting is the easiest to get to grips with, retaining the string’s natural tone and sustaining indefinitely. In the Mix setting, depending on where you fret a note, harmonic feedback resonates over the guitar’s natural tone – the effect is not unlike using a loud, overdriven amp. The Harmonic mode is altogether harder to tame, as fretted notes surrender themselves immediately to squealing harmonic feedback – even when you’re using a clean tone, the effect is over the top. Sustainiac humbucker gives you never-ending tone. The variety of sounds you can get with it , are not limited and all of the stuff I have tried to play on it has worked amazingly.

This guitar also has a Floyd Rose 1000 series tremolo system lets you carve out hardcore bends Schecter knows that serious shredders, such as you, demand absolute performance out of their guitars. It was perfectly set up with it being perfectly flat and good a locking vibrato unit. This incredible bridge lets you grab on, rock out, and never worry about pulling your action out of whack. Finally, it also has grover 18:1 tuners which provide the kind of stability you need to shred with confidence.

This is a review video of Schecter Synyster Gates Custom-S Electric Guitar

Most people reading this review will probably be Avenged Sevenfold fans, well this guitar is the perfect match for the music I play (Avenged Sevenfold, obviously) and it sounds brilliant. It is perfect for metal and if you want to switch to a clean tone it will sound warm and crisp. Seeing as Synyster Gates plays this guitar it will withstand live playing and the hardware on it is of the highest quality so it will definitely last a long time before you will need to get it repaired. The finish is brilliant but the one problem I could potentially see with this guitar would be the battery running out in the middle of a gig if it isn’t replaced often enough. If you’re looking for an axe that can withstand the brutality of metal shredding, this is the guitar for you. The price of Schecter Synyster Gates Custom-S Electric Guitar is about $1149.00
