In the January 2013 issue of Keyboard, I reviewed five compact USB MIDI controllers, including the Samson Carbon 49 and Graphite 49. The Alesis QX49, which arrived too late to include in the printed magazine, is an interesting midpoint between the two Samson models. Visually, the QX49 makes a good first impression, managing to look clean and functional. The new QX49 packs a lot more punch than its cheaper sibling, the Q49. It’s eight assignable faders, four pads and eight rotary encoders combine to give real depth of hands-on control over your favourite piece of software, be it a soft-synth or a DAW. Reasonably compact (32 x 9 x 3 inches) and lightweight, due to its all-plastic construction, it has a four-octave, 49-note keyboard.
According to several user reviews, they have praised Alesis QX49 for a useful selection of assignable knobs, sliders and pads; MIDI ports and (optional) external power allow a variety of uses; Bright, readable LCD screen; Affordable. Also, some users have complained it for the Poor, incomplete documentation; Velocity-curve function obscure.
To restoring Alesis QX49 to it’s factory settings, just simply power ON while simultaneously holding the leftmost and rightmost [TRANSPORT CONTROL] buttons.
