2010-2022 Ford Mustang Fuel Door/Gas Cap Release Guide

So you just bought a new Ford Mustang, or you have a rental car, and you’re at the gas station? Trying to put your first tank of gas in your Ford Mustang, and you can’t figure out how to release that gas cap or fuel door there.

Well, don’t feel bad because I did the same thing when buying this car. I pulled into the gas station, and I could not find the release lever for this. Well, that’s because there isn’t a release lever for it. So let me guide you through the procedure.

How To Release The Fuel Door/Gas Cap On Ford Mustang

Time needed: 1 minute

Today, I have a 2017 Ford Mustang, and I’m going to show you how to open up the gas tank fuel door on this particular vehicle. It’s a pretty simple process, so let me do that now.

  1. Unlock your car

First, make sure your car is unlocked and you’re going to go to the driver’s side of the vehicle and look for this the circle here where the fuel door is

  2. Push the cover

Then you’re going to put your fingers right towards the back of the vehicle on this little circle and give it a nice firm push so you’ll be able to open it up

  3. Refuel

There’s no gas cap so you just need to put the nozzle inside of there and fuel up your gasoline

  4. Close the fuel door

Once you’re done you’ll close it put your fingers back on the back of it and you’ll feel it lock back into place

So that’s how you open up the gas tank fuel door on this car (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 model years). If this content has been useful, guys, please leave a comment below; that’d be much appreciated. Thanks for your time, and have a good time.

  • Thank you. I'm going to do this, I'd forgotten how because I hadn't driven my Mustang lately , Subaru is very different.I'm also getting to be a real senior lady!

  • Step 1 is incorrect - at least on the 2016 model I have (GT Convertible). The car does not have to be unlocked. There is no security at all. Anyone can come along at any time and siphon out your fuel, or shove a rag down there and set it on fire (as seems to be the fad lately). It is just the most terrible design idea Ford has ever had.
