DIY Fix: Ford Focus Power Steering Assist Fuse (Years 2012–2021)

What’s going on guys? Is your Ford Focus steering wheel suddenly hard to turn? Are you seeing a Power Steering Assist Fault warning on your dashboard? One of the most common culprits is a blown electric power assist steering fuse. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the fuse locations and replacement process for both the Ford Focus MK3 (2012–2018) and MK4 (2019–2021).

Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just getting started, this step-by-step guide will help you diagnose and replace this critical fuse safely and confidently. So come with me and stay tuned.

⚡ What Does the Electric Power Steering Fuse Do?

Modern vehicles like the Ford Focus use electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) instead of traditional hydraulic systems. A small 5-amp fuse powers this system—and if it fails, steering becomes difficult or unresponsive. Thankfully, it’s a quick fix once you know where to look.

🔧 Ford Focus MK3 (2012–2018) Electric Power Steering Fuse Location

For 2012 to 2018 Ford Focus models (MK3 generation), the electric power steering fuse is located in the under-hood fuse box.

✅ Fuse Details:

  • Fuse Number: F40
  • Amperage: 5A
  • Color: Brown
  • Type: Mini fuse

🔍 How to Replace:

  1. Pop the hood and locate the under-hood fuse box (usually on the driver’s side).
  2. Use a fuse puller or needle-nose pliers to remove fuse F40.
  3. Hold it up to a light—if the metal strip inside is broken, the fuse is blown.
  4. Replace it with a new 5-amp brown mini fuse (same rating and color only).
  5. Never upgrade to a higher amp fuse—it could damage your electrical system.

🔧 Ford Focus MK4 (2019–2021) Electric Power Steering Fuse Location

For 2019 to 2021 Ford Focus models (MK4 generation), Ford moved the fuse—but it’s still easy to access with a bit of care. You might need to see this VIDEO to access the fuse.

✅ Fuse Details:

  • Fuse Number: 36
  • Amperage: 5A
  • Color: Brown
  • Type: Mini fuse

🔍 How to Replace:

  1. Open the hood and locate the engine compartment fuse box.
  2. Reference your owner’s manual or fuse box diagram for exact placement.
  3. Use a fuse puller to gently remove fuse 36.
  4. Inspect it visually or with a multimeter.
  5. Replace with a new 5A mini fuse if it’s blown.

⚠️ Safety Tip: Always disconnect the battery before working on fuses to avoid electrical shorts or accidental shocks.

🛠️ Final Thoughts

A blown electric power steering fuse can turn an easy drive into a struggle—but it’s an easy and inexpensive fix once you know where to look. Stick to the correct fuse rating and color, follow your Ford Focus fuse diagram, and you’ll be back on the road in no time.
