2016-2021 Mazda 6 Oil Change/Service Light Reset Guide

What’s going on, fellas! If you’re curious about how to reset the oil change or service light on your 2016 Mazda 6, we’re going to go ahead and do that today. You’ll know it’s time for an oil change because, on your dash, you’ll get the big wrench indicator in the middle of the screen.

Something to be said about the check to change your engine oil light is that when you get that light doesn’t necessarily mean you have lousy oil in your engine. It’s just that you know whenever you go to change your oil. So let’s jump into this and get this thing done.

2016-2021 Mazda 6 Oil Change/Service Light Reset Guide

Time needed: 3 minutes

Alright, guys, I’m in a 2016 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, and I’m going to show you how to reset the maintenance messages that come up on the dash. There this one is coming up for the oil change that’s due. So now all you need to do is:

  1. Turn on your car

First, sit in the car with the key and then hit the START button twice until everything lights up

  2. Press the HOME button

Next what you do is is hit the HOME button on the center console to bring you to the main menu

  3. Go to the APPLICATION

Then you’re going to scroll over to APPLICATION and pull that up

  4. Select VEHICLE STATUS MONITOR

After that, go down and select the VEHICLE STATUS MONITOR

  5. Find the MAINTENANCE

Scroll down again to MAINTENANCE and get in

  6. Select SCHEDULED or OIL CHANGE

From here you can enable and disable the scheduled maintenance and the tire rotation as far as the oil change. So we’re going to go into there and go down to RESET

  7. Adjust the interval or reset it

Here you can adjust the interval to whatever you want or just reset it. When you select reset it asks you to reset, select RESET to confirm it

For your info, this operation work for the third generation of the Mazda 6 (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 model years).

So there we go. We’re done, so I reset the time in the distance as well. And the schedule is already set, and I can see that the wrench is gone. Let me know if you guys have any questions about resetting the maintenance messages on your Mazda 6. I hope this was helpful, and best of luck to you.

    • I love my 2018 Mazda 6, but the maintenance warning system is not one of the features that endears the car to me. It's flawed, because it's obvious from searching the web that lots of people have problems clearing warning messages, aven when following the instructions in the manual (and if you'd done so with success, hold back your angry, self-satisfied RTFM replies...you've just been lucky). The tire pressure monitoring system is also flawed. It seems to dislike a pressure differential that's equivalent to a popcorn fart. Finally, the Sirius system occasionally just stops responding, and the only solution is to pull over to the side of the road, stop the car and restart it. (Here too - the three finger reset that's sometimes suggested doesn't work so don't do it!)

Other than that, I love my 6.

  • Hi,
I tried this on my 2019 Mazda 6 GT Sport, but the message is still coming up on the dashboard. I've reset the oil change and the maintenance menus, but the message stays. Any ideas? Thanks!

    • Quick fix. I don't know why this isn't in the manual or what it's purpose is. I called Mazda service dept. explaining the problem. I had to get an appointment drive 70 miles only to be told all I had to do was reset the warning light. Would they tell me how to do this? Of course not. The next time it appeared I had to search to find this fix. All you have to do is press and hold the dash light dimmer/odometer button. While holding this button down press the start button 2 times and continue holding dimmer button until warning stops flashing. Takes a total of maybe 10 seconds.

  • This is what you need to do:
    1. Ignition Off
    2. Press and hold the dimmer / odometer button
    3. Press Start button while holding the dimmer button
    4. A little warning light will flash at the dash, keep pressing the dimmer button until the flashes stop.
    That's it.
