2007-2015 Chevrolet Silverado Oil Life/Oil Change Light Reset Guide

Are you here because you are looking to reset oil life or oil change light on a Chevrolet Silverado? You are at the right site! Today, we’re going to show you how to reset the oil life or remove the change oil light from your dash. We just finished changing the engine oil, so we’re going to go through the process.

So there are three ways that you can actually do to reset the oil light on the Chevy Silverado. The first way I want to tell you is the traditional way of resetting it, and then the second and third ways we’re going to do the new way of doing it. So let’s go ahead.

The Easiest Way To Reset Oil Life in Chevrolet Silverado

The fastest and most effective way to reset the oil light on this vehicle is by stepping on the gas pedal. Just step on the accelerator pedal three times to the floor within five seconds after you turn the key to the accessory position without starting the vehicle.

That’s it fairly simple, right? And that’s how Chevy’s been doing it for years.

Resetting the Oil Change Light with Steering Button

Time needed: 3 minutes

This second way is a new way that I want to show you there. This method uses the navigation buttons on the steering wheel, so make sure your Silverado is equipped with this. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Turn on the ignition without starting the engine

If your vehicle has an ignition button, press and holds the Engine Start/Stop button for 5 seconds without touching the brake pedal

  2. Press the ◄ navigation button to access the cluster applications

The button is located on the steering wheel

  3. Find and select the INFO page

Use the arrows you’re gonna be using scroll through the menu and then press the ✓ button as the enter button to select items

  4. Scroll down to the “REMAINING OIL LIFE” menu

Use the ▲ or ▼ button to scroll through the menu

  5. Press and hold the ✓ button until oil life changes to 100%

If a message appears on the display, select YES to confirm

  6. Restart your car

Turn the ignition off and start the engine to verify the indicator has been reset

Chevrolet Silverado Oil Reset Guide with Cluster Knob

This third method uses a knob in the instrument cluster. This method is quite easy, but only the base level Silverado can use this method. So the first thing you have to do is:

  • Make sure the truck’s key to the on position with the engine is not running
  • Turn the knob on the cluster to scroll through the Oil Life display
  • Press and hold the knob until the Oil Life resets to 100%
  • Turn the ignition off and then turn it back on to confirm that everything is done

For your information, this procedure works on the second generation of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2500HD (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 model years). The latest model has a little bit different but I’ll try to get you a link up here.

Chevrolet Silverado Maintenance Schedule

If you have a Chevrolet Silverado, it’s a good idea to get it serviced regularly. There are several different types of maintenance that need to be routinely performed. Oil and filter changes are the most common, but you can expect other maintenance work done as well. At least twice a year, your mechanic will inspect your vehicle’s brakes and check the fluid level. Brake fluid is an essential component of a vehicle’s safety system. Your mechanic will replace the fluid at the 45,000-mile mark.

Your Chevrolet Silverado Maintenance Schedule will include oil changes, tire rotation, and brake pads. You can also choose to have your Chevrolet mechanic inspect the brake pads, engine air filter, and cabin air filters. Oil changes continue through the 30,000 and 37500-mile range. Tire rotation is also included, but not as often. It would be best to have your Chevrolet Silverado serviced twice every two years or 4,000 miles.

Your Chevy Silverado maintenance schedule begins with an oil change and a comprehensive mechanical system inspection. Your mechanic will check the transmission fluid, brake fluid, and engine air filter. A mechanic will also check the gas strut, ignition transmission lock, shift lock control, brake fluid, and parking brake at every service interval. Then they will change the spark plug and replace the air filter. All of these tasks should be completed by your Chevrolet mechanic.

FAQ – Chevrolet Silverado Oil Maintenance

What oil is used in Chevy Silverado?

The engine’s size affects the kind of oil used in the Chevrolet Silverado 1500. A synthetic oil of 5W-30 is suggested for the 4.3-litre engine, while a 0W-20 is suggested for the 5.3-litre and the 6.2-litre engines.

How much oil does a Chevy Silverado need?

When using an oil filter, the vehicle can hold 6 quarts of oil in the 4.3-litre V6 engine and 8 quarts in the 5.3-litre and 6-liter V8 engine versions. Drain plug torque is 18 ft/lbs on all vehicle models.

How often does a Silverado need an oil change?

Oil can’t last forever. Thus you must replace it at some point. Every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, you should get your oil and filter changed.

So there you go. That was pretty basic, straightforward content, but I did want to show you guys if you weren’t aware that you could do it that way or if you prefer to do the old method, which I think I do; it’s just easy for you. Thanks for reading and have a good day.
